Artist Statement
I am a painter and an observer. I seek access to land off the roads. I document times of day, weather and seasons. That usually takes the form of landscape painting. Sometimes I do just color studies. My work helps me bond with my environment and the communities where I live. I’ve lived in wilderness, rural, urban and suburban places on both sides of the Canada-U. S. border. The land doesn’t vary much along political lines but access to it seems to be a cultural thing.
I use maps a lot in my life to locate painting sites and to navigate our way across Canada and the US. (see examples below.) I like to keep my work in as raw and unframed a state as possible but sometimes for display I have to add framing materials. Much of what I do I consider “field notes” and they are as complete as I want them to be.
